Thermo’s Bold Bet on LIMS-on-Demand

Bio-IT World | For several years the LIMS market (roughly $400M worldwide) has been stuck in neutral. Indeed, depending upon whose estimate you believe, perhaps 80 percent of labs forego the use of commercial LIMS for a variety of well-documented reasons – high cost, year-long deployment efforts, inflexibility, etc.  That’s all about to change, says Kim Shah, ThermoFisher Scientific’s director of marketing, informatics, and Thermo will lead the charge.

Tumor Recurrance 'Red Flags' via Blood Test

Business Week Researchers at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center and Life Technologies have scanned the genomes of six cancer patients looking for rearranged DNA. Once found, these sections were used as red flags to see whether the patients' blood contained tumor DNA after treatment.

AstraZeneca Saves $150m with Better Data Management

Computing | AstraZeneca is reportedly on track to save $150m in reduced IT costs and increased efficiency thanks to better data management for clinical trials.

Smarter Cancer Strategies

Xconomy | We can't keep using 20th century clinical trials to evaluate 21st century cancer drugs, but patient-centric approaches combined with genomic and computational technologies can transform cancer research.

Pharma's Early Cloud Adopters

Bio-IT World | Andrew Kaczorek, associate information consultant with Eli Lilly, has been experimenting with Amazon Web Services (AWS). “The amount of time it spends and the amount of dollars it costs are entirely predictable. If [researchers] know exactly what workload that they’re pushing into it, they can know exactly when it should be done and how much their bill is going to be.”

New Directions for BioIT Alliance

Bio-IT World | CAMBRIDGE—During a two-day meeting in October, the BioIT Alliance rolled out a plan to lessen its dependence on Microsoft and morph into an independent standards development organization (SDO).

Autism Genetics a 'Long Road'

Bio-IT World | Researchers have identified some of the genetic variations in autism. Their results will be published in the October 8 issue of Nature. Researchers from the Broad Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins University, and elsewhere pinpointed a SNP in a neuronal gene not previously linked to the disorder and highlight two other regions of the genome, which likely contain rare genetic differences that may also influence autism risk.

Clinical Trials Not Publishing Results

Nature News | Though ClinicalTrials.gov was established almost ten years ago, fewer than half of registered clinical trials publish their results in peer-reviewed journals and fewer than half of all trials adequately register.

JDRF Taps VisionTree for Matching Diabetics to Trials

Sep 8 | VisionTree’s Optimal Care Platform is the backbone of a clinical trial recruitment tool aimed at type 1 diabetics, which launched July 31 on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

The Greatest Threat: A Loss in the Lab

Bio-IT World | Guest Commentary | Life science and technology companies face the same struggles experienced by many industries in today’s economy: Inability to raise capital, increased operating costs, greater global competition and heightened governmental and industry regulations.

Breaking Through Real World Storage Barriers in Next Generation Sequencing
Sponsored by BlueArc

To effectively and efficiently manage the rapidly increasing needs of an NGS research environment numerous considerations for data management become important in moving today’s terabyte and petabyte levels of data. Some key concerns can include:

  • Maintaining enough  headroom to handle additional and unplanned data growth
  • How to address mixed workloads
  • Working with multiple file and network protocols
  • Dealing with aging data
  • Optimizing varied storage subsystems already in place while preparing for new floods of data to come

This paper investigates trends and solutions in addressing these issues, and more, for life science professionals.
